The Galactic Fifth Column "The corrupt oppose us. The honest support us. The heroic join us."
The Galactic Fifth Column is an underground alliance of various groups and individuals from the Republic, the Empire, and everything in between united in under one cause. Their ultimate goal is galactic liberation from corruption and abuse of power. The GFC rarely seeks to eliminate entire groups, organizations, institutions, or governments. Rather, the Fifth Column focuses on removing specific individuals found to be guilty of power abuse and corruption. They do this through a combination of espionage, sabotage, and political intrigue. The GFC's members work in secret, infiltrating targeted organizations and forwarding the Column's agenda.
The original Fifth Column was formed from a small band of renegades who broke their ties with the Republic and continued fighting a guerrilla campaign against the Sith Empire in defiance of the Treaty of Coruscant. The Galactic Fifth Column of today is just as concerned with the corruption of the Galactic Republic as they are concerned with the tyranny of the Sith Empire. The GFC uses behind-the-scenes diplomacy to outmaneuver its opponents in Republic space.
The Sith Empire
As part of its guerrilla campaign during the Cold War, the Fifth Column began to infiltrate the Empire to sabotage it from within. Eventually, the Columnists started to recruit allies from within the Empire itself: Sith and Imperials who were disillusioned by the tyrannical powers that be. As the Imperial Fifth Column grew in size and influence, a paradigm shift began to take place throughout the movement as a whole. Instead of aiming to bring down the Empire, the Imperial Fifth Columnists began to think of themselves as the Empire's true patriots, resisting a broken feudalistic establishment that only served to undermine the glorious Imperial machine. The Imperial Fifth Column operates in complete secrecy to evade those who would brand them traitors for their dissent. In response, the IFC uses its spies and assassins to subvert and bring down the self-serving Moffs and Darths who place themselves above the Empire.
The Fifth Column's rogue status forced the secret movement to become self-reliant. The early Fifth Column funded its operations through privateering: seizing enemy supplies and trading them on the black market for weapons, ships, and everything else a guerrilla army needs. They recruited freelancers and independent traders to expand the Column's clandestine supply lines. As the GFC's underworld influence grew, it began to use its connections and muscle to combat practices that the GFC fundamentally opposes such as racketeering and sentient-trafficking. In addition to vigilante activities, the Fifth Column has gained a reputation for its populist practices: setting up free medical clinics, repairing infrastructure, and many other endeavors to win hearts and minds.
The Business World
As the GFC's influence spread throughout the galaxy, its influence in the galactic financial sector increased as well. Columnists established a number of legitimate front corporations to act as proxies through which the GFC could publicly do business and further extend the Column's agenda. The GFC supported it's allies through corporate espionage and subterfuge against unscrupulous competitors such as the infamous Czerka Corporation.
